Intern Introduction: Spencer Davis

Hello! My name is Spencer Davis, and I am thrilled to intern at Circles of Jackson County. I am an English major at Western Carolina University, concentrated in Professional Writing. I currently serve as a Professional and Technical Writing Fellow and an Academic Skills Consultant at the university’s Writing and Learning Commons.

I began volunteering with Circles in the fall writing a press release for an upcoming event; after Hurricane Helene, I started attending weekly meetings. I found that Circles does an amazing job connecting Jackson County residents to needed services in mental health, food insecurity, and job opportunities, among many other kinds of support.

I was able to volunteer more than my presence and emotional support, but also crucial services that help the organization run smoothly. Around January of 2025, I began updating the website, creating graphic design content for community outreach, sending emails to our partners, and making application forms for potential student volunteers. After volunteering around 8 hours a week throughout the semester, Dawn considered me an intern and has helped me officially begin an internship position in the Fall 2025, this time for credit in the English program.

As an intern, I continue to create website content, make connections within the community, and advocate for others to join Circles in their mission. I hope to work at a deeper level for the rest of my time at Western, using appealing visuals and content from other students to recruit new Circle Leaders and Allies, donors, partners, and additional support. Each Tuesday night I meet with new friends, enjoy a nice meal, and share what I have learned in my courses.

On top of the professional development opportunity I have earned through my volunteering, I would like to thank Circles of Jackson County, Dawn Neatherly, Rachel Byrd, and many others for giving me a sense of community and purpose that I otherwise would not have discovered without them.
